If you are looking for more detailed information about how we manage our waste, here are some key figures about the waste that is generated in Tayside.
Tayside’s current recycling and composting rate is 33% (from rolling year data for July 2006 – June 2007)*.
The waste that we produce in Scotland is increasing by around 1% each year*. The graph below shows the amount of waste produced in Tayside each year since 2000.

Much of the waste that we produce can be reused or recycled. In addition to reuse and recycling, we also need to reduce the amount of waste that we produce in the first place. Reducing, reusing and recycling are all important parts of the solution to help us reach our targets for reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.
Key waste targets from the Tayside Area Waste Plan:
- 2010 – recycle 19% and compost 11% of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
- 2010 – recover energy from 31% of MSW
- 2020 – recycle 33% and compost 14% of MSW
- 2020 – recover energy from 29% of MSW
