There are a number of steps that you can take to reduce the amount of unwanted mail you receive.
- Register with the Mailing Preference Service which helps to reduce the amount of unrequested mail you receive. Visit www.mpsonline.org.uk or phone 0845 703 4599. Please note that using this method could result in you no longer receiving some mail that you may still wish to receive.
- Register to opt out of Royal Mail's Door to Door Service to stop receiving unaddressed mail delivered by your post man.

Please note that this will result in you no longer receiving unaddressed mail from central and local government and other public bodies.
- Write directly to the sender to request that they remove you from their database for mail outs.
- Tick the ‘opt out’ box for receiving further mailings when filling out forms.
- Request online billing.
- Tick the box to be excluded from the ‘edited register’ on the annual electoral register, which can be sold to marketing companies.
If you do end up with unwanted mail please recycle as much of it as possible.

Fruit and vegetable peelings, tea leaves and coffee grounds, cardboard, paper and garden waste can all be composted at home. Food digestors are available to allow you to compost meat and cooked and uncooked food.

If you have finished with an item in good condition someone else may be able to use it:
- There are a number of reuse projects across Tayside which will accept donations of furniture and electrical items in good working order. They may also be able to collect your items. For more information on what’s available in your area visit the Reuse section of Sort It.
- Charity shops accept donations of a variety of reusable items in good condition. If it is a larger item or electronic please check with the charity shop that they can accept it.
- There are lots of ways to buy and sell second hand items including auctions, online auctions, car boot sales and small press adverts. For more information on what is available in your area visit the Reuse section of Sort It.
- Freecycle is a web based service which can be used to give or receive unwanted items free of charge. There are a number of groups in Tayside, for more information visit www.freecycle.org.
- You can recycle electrical and electronic equipment including fridges and freezers, TVs, washing machines and cookers at Recycling Centres. For the location of Recycling Centres in your area see the Recycle section of Sort It.

Many items can be repaired when they break rather than being replaced, for example:
- Shoes can be reheeled.
- Old furniture can be reupholstered.
- Furniture and carpets can be steam cleaned.
- Some electrical items can be fixed.

Look out for things you can hire instead of buying to help Reduce waste.
- Books, CDs and tapes can all be hired from your local library.
- Videos and DVDs can be rented from video shops and some libraries.
- If you are having a large party consider hiring glasses, plates and cutlery instead of using disposable ones.
- A variety of tools such as garden shredders, sanders and paint strippers can be hired for one off jobs.
