    Waste audit

find out whats in your bin Before you start reducing, reusing and recycling your business waste, you might find it useful to carry out a waste audit to find out what is being thrown away.

    Struggling with disposable cups?
    colin with mug
4,000,000,000 (yes that's 4 billion!) vending cups are used in the UK alone each year. The number of disposable cups you use can be reduced by:

    • Making your own drink in a reusable cup instead of using a vending machine.

    • Requesting reusable cups when you book venues for meetings or events.
If you have to use disposable cups, investigate setting up a collection for recycling.
    Take a waste free lunch
    lunch
You can reduce and reuse your lunch waste by:
    • Using reusable cups, glasses, plates and cutlery.

    • Refilling flasks or bottles for drinks rather than buying a new bottle, can or carton of drink every day.

    • Using reusable containers for sandwiches and snacks instead of disposable wrapping.

    • Taking compostable waste home with you - have a little bag at your desk for putting tea leaves and fruit peelings in.

    Think before you print

The idea of a paperless office is hard to imagine, but here are some ways you can reduce and reuse paper: paper pile
    • Print and photocopy double-sided – adjusting your printer or photocopier default settings to double-sided will considerably reduce the volume of paper you use. If your printer or photocopier doesn’t have a double sided option, consider this when you buy or hire a new one.

    • When possible print two to a page.

    • Use scrap paper for printing rough copies or for note paper.

    • Only print documents if necessary.

    • Consider online subscriptions for magazines.

    • Only print emails when necessary.
    Reduce unwanted mail

unwanted mail Here are some ways you can reduce and reuse your mail:
    • Register with the Mailing Preference Service and the Fax Preference Service – this reduces the amount of unrequested addressed mail and faxes you receive. Please note this service cannot stop mail from companies you have had dealings with, mail addressed to the occupier or unaddressed mail. Find out more at:

      www.mpsonline.org.uk
      www.fpsonline.org.uk

Please note that the above services could result in you no longer receiving some mail you may still wish to receive.
    • Reuse envelopes internally and externally.

    • Save stamps and donate to charity.

    • Save packaging like bubble wrap, posting tubes and brown paper for sending items.

    • Return unwanted mail to sender with a sticker requesting that the company take you off their mailing list.
